In Slide’s eight-year history we have made big strides to ensure a more global audience can experience our glossy take on alternative surfboard riding.
Several changes have occurred at Slide since we printed our last edition, and all are quickly proving to be positive strides. Behind the scenes, Slide has quietly devised a plan to smash into the United States marketplace. Thanks to a major distribution deal with Ingram Periodicals, Slide Magazine will now be available at bookstores and specialty shops across the U.S.; and the list of surf shops signing on to sell Slide continues to grow weekly. You may also notice that Slide is actively working with an international collection of contest organizers, event promoters, webmasters, and even independent tradesmen (and tradeswomen) to give our magazine and our advertisers as much publicity as possible.
One slightly overt change regular readers will recognize is Slide’s new logo. With much deliberation, it was decided to omit the word “Longboarding” from our title. Naturally, Slide will continue to showcase all facets of longboarding, but, these days, there’s a cornucopia of board designs that exist between the age-old longboard and the newfangled 6’2” thruster shortie, and we aim to continue highlighting these surf craft with the same Slide fervor you’re accustomed to.
Plus, there were a few, subtle, editorial adjustments made over the past few months. After some discussion, publisher Al Ashworth lured friend, photographer, and accomplished noserider Ron Greene into Slide’s tight-knit family. Ron has already established himself as a steady-handed shooter (now a staff photog) and a sharp-minded American businessman. Issue #14 also welcomes a new graphic artist/designer, matt King, onto the team. Of course, Matt was tossed right onto the lightning-paced production fire on this one, and he has responded impressively. Good on ya, Matt! And, finally, Al’s ever-increasing list of publisher duties led him to recast the masthead and how editorial will run. Graciously, Al handed over the Head Editor reigns to me, Ryan A. Smith, known to many simply as “RS.” I’ve been a contributing Slide writer/editor for the past six years, so I’m no stranger to the theme and have no desire to make wholesale changes. In fact, I believe my history and experience in the surf mag game will help Slide remain fresh and relevant, present our beloved sport/lifestyle/religion in a communal light, and leap straight to the top.
